Description This AIA (Atmospheric Imaging Assembly) video shows a close-up view of a filament launch, in a wavelength band that is centered around 304 Ångström. This extreme ultraviolet emission line is from singly ionized Helium, or He II, and corresponds to a temperature of approx. 50,000 degrees Celsius.

Filaments can erupt fully or partially and these erupted material can be observed in form of coronal mass ejections which can collide with Earth's magnetosphere, where they can cause geomagnetic storms, aurorae, and in rare cases damage to electrical power grids.
